It is clear that the Naples Sabot is a far superior junior training boat, when compared to the optimist. The ratio of sabot sailors who become successful olympians, world champions, colligiate all americans and etc. is much higher than that of the Optimist. The question is, why? I grew up sailing the sabot, and think that they are totally sweet, however it is puzzling how many champions are produced with a boat with a leeboard and a class rule banning carbon fiber. Theories?

There will be 200 Opti's at the USODA Team Trials on Berkeley Circle in May 2011. Come join the fun! I'm sure the 125 pounders will be just fine. |

I think this argument is much simpler than what a lot of people are arguing above. I don't think the performance of each boat is useful for argument, they both have their intricacies and design flaws but still prove to be good at developing sailors. |

When the sabot came to N. California they reduced the sail area, added a tiny foredeck, changed from leeboard to daggerboad and started calling in an "El Toro" {G!}. None the less, I learned to sail on S. F. bay in a sabot. When the wind blows you hike a bit. When the wind blows a lot people under 100 pounds don't do well. |

Adam.... get with the rest of the world buddy. It's not about a few hot shot sailors, although I'd like to see your data on that. If you ask the kids and families, what's truly great about the Sabot they say it's the fun, the comaradarie, the friendships. So what's great about the Opti? THE VERY SAME THING! |

can I see your ratio? thought all the gold went to those UK Opti freaks? What is the price of a full tweak naples sabot? are all sabots the same? what is wrong with travel? being able to fly to Qingdao and sail with other kids? |

I coached Sabots and Optis this summer, and I think it's fair to say that Sabot sailors enjoy a longer sailing season than most Opti sailors. And that they have to overcome the challenges of that infamous leeboard. It's easy to go sailing every day ten months out of the year in SC, not so much so on the Cape. What puzzles me is how SoCal sailors ever learn how to sail in big breeze. The one regatta that blew over 10kts in Newport this summer almost destroyed the Bay's entire C1 - C3 fleet...Kids from the Right Coast start sailing in breeze when they're still in diapers. How'd you manage Adam? |

Sure, Sabots are faster and more fun but if you sail a sabot are you really prepared to sail one of the other awesome sweet modern flat bow-ed boat with a sprit pole. Peep this ... http://www.algomasailingclub.org/images/forsale/sprit-rig1.jpg So sorry California, the cutting edge remains in the east; and we're trained for it. |

Hello,
I grew up on a sabot in SC, never raced though, however I still sail alot. I recently bought a Opti to get my 7 year old going, but have found no racing or lessons in San Diego for them. Meanwhile I just want her to have fun with the experience but come summer, I would like her in some program with other kids. San Diego, any suggestions.
Thanks
Scott
