Our Annapolis to Newport Race on James Muldoon's Donnybrook started Friday afternoon and ended abruptly early Saturday morning when the keel of the big black boat met the rocks of the south jetty of the Chesapeake Bay tunnel near Norfolk, Virginia. Donnybrook hit the rocks at the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel just after dawn on June 4th and was forced to retire with serious damage and three crew needing medical attention. I was an umpire at the Friis-Marchiando trophy this weekend, a college team race co-hosted by MIT and Tufts. Interesting weekend of racing, with lots of calls. The College of Charleston won over BC, with Harvard and Brown in third and fourth, respectively. Here an interesting scenario we ran into: Team A, B, C is winning the race with a 1, 2, 3 combination at the top mark. Downwind, their opponents (X, Y, and Z) make some gains, and at the leeward mark X is inside C, who was in third place. Both X and C believe they have mark-room; C argues tha...
This post, borrowed from USSTAG member Sarah Lihan's official campaign site, lihansailing.com, serves as somewhat of a followup to last week's announcement that Sarah Chin was no longer sailing 470's with Amanda Clark. On Monday, US Sailing announced its 2011 US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics with Sarah Lihan, the longtime US Laser Radial sailor, listed alongside Clark's name. Lihan explains: It is with great excitement that I write this post, for while it means the end of Lihan Sailing by its lonesome, it is the beginning of a new...
By John Mollicone, Head Coach, Brown University Sailing Team Dear College Sailors, Coaches, Alumni, and Fans, As many of you have heard, the historic Edgewood Yacht Club, home of the Brown University Sailing Team, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at around 4:00am. Speculation is that lightning struck the club’s roof from a rare snow-thunderstorm. The blizzard produced 8 inches of snow and gusts up to 40 knots. It was truly a sad day for everyone who has been a part of the Edgewood Yacht Club, including the dedicated me...
This blog comes from USSTAG Development Team member Clay Johnson at claysails.com. Johnson is tied for first after the first day of competition at Rolex Miami OCR. Today was the first day of the Miami OCR. I was in the yellow fleet and started second today, sailing the inner trapezoid. We had 10-15 knots and a lot of chop. Coming into the weather mark. Photo Credit: Al Clark In the first race, I had a good start at the boat and played the middle right up the first beat. At the first mark, Giaccamo Bottoli (IT...
Danny Rabin reports from J24 Worlds in Sweden. His team includes Tim Healy, Moose McClintock, John Mollicone and Gordon Borges. Photos © Magbus Grubb. I didn't sleep well last night. I don't know if it was anxiety or the Brazilian barbeque that Mauricio Santa Cruz treated us to. I had nightmares where the themes included Tim yelling about trimming the vang, and the Principal Race Officer, Peter Reggio, explaining to me that we were going to race on Saturday as well. As expected, it was on the lighter side when we headed out to...
Thanks to Sailgroove contributer Ken Legler for this blog. Three items in my "morning paper" saddened me. Beginning with the least upsetting...470s dropped as Women's doublehanded equip for next games, replaced by 29erxx. This comes just days after listening to Isabel Kinsolving (Yale'02) recounting her (and Erin Maxwell's Dart.'01) win in the most recent women's 470 Worlds and how they had planned to continue with Olympic dreams. Perhaps this is not such a sad story as a class I was closely involved with (many years ago) goes the way of a new ...
