Bronze Medal at USSTAG Quali

Unfortunately our day of racing did not go as we'd planned or hoped. With lighter breeze we were happy to face Team Barkow for the last decider race in the semi-finals, but after being slightly early in the start we were able to catch up on the first downwind, but not enough to overtake them in the choppy Sunday on the Key Biscayne bay conditions. From there Sally's team was on a roll and went on to beat Team Tunnicliffe 3-0 in the finals. We raced Becca Dellenbaugh and her new team in the Petit-finals, and while they gave us a good fight we we...

Getting Started in Miami

After four great days of warm (hot!)-weather practice in Key Biscayne, our USSTAG Qualifier Regatta starts tomorrow (today now as we didn’t have internet last night). We’ve already qualified for the 2011 US Sailing Team Alphagraphics based on last year’s international results, along with teammates Team Tunnicliffe and Team Barkow. But the regatta is still important for us, as it is a qualifier for our next three World Cup events, including the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta, which starts later this month. For the rest of the 8 ...

Carlos Aguilar Match Race Champions!!!

After a great week of sailing (and enjoying!) St. Thomas, and some very, very close racing, our team of Genny, Jenn Chamberlin, Alice Manard, and Liz Hall took the Championship for the Carlos Aguilar Match Race, Women's division! We truly 'got our money's worth', as after two round robins our racing went to all 5 races with Sally Barkow in the semis, and all 3 against Lucy Macgregor in the finals. Happily for us, we came away winning both! Having gotten an early lead against Sally's team 2-0 on Saturday, we fell to being slightly early leading ...

Tied for first in Gold, Quarterfinals tomorrow against Leroy

Really quick update as we're heading to bed after returning from the beautiful and delicious regatta banquet dinner at the NYYC. Had the Gold Round Robin racing today, with some really incredible races. Started off the day hot with a penalty that we spun on the final downwind against Spithill, then beat Leroy off the line in the downwind current and led around the race course. Third race got lighter and dodgier and although we were able to draw a penalty on Souter in the pre-start and lead off the line, she got by us on the left side of the upw...

World Championship Starts Tomorrow!

Our team arrived, registered and practiced today in Newport RI, and we are awaiting tomorrow's start of the 2010 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship! Twenty teams from 14 countries are here to fight for the title of World Champion, competing on Sonars out of the NYYC Harbor Court. Our team of me, Jenn Chamberlin, Alice Manard Leonard (more on that later), and Liz Hall, will be coached this week by Pete Levesque a local/sonar knowledge and team racing expert (and Liz's brother-in-law). Pete is also two-time World Champion and four time ...

Worlds training and Buddy Melges Challenge

With the Match Racing Worlds quickly approaching (Sept 20-25 in Newport, RI), we’re one week into a month of intense training in preparation for the big event. Last week we trained in Sonars with our world championship team of Liz Hall on the bow, Alice Manard trimming jib and calling tactics, and Jenn Chamberlin trimming main and kite. We had a great USSTAG training camp at the US Sailing Center in Sheboygan with coach Luther Carpenter, American teammate Sally Barkow and Lucy Macgregor’s team from GBR, who are currently ranked #1 i...

Summer so far, Valencia action, and racing starting in Weymouth!

Hello all! (Sorry I couldn’t actually send this out last night as our house internet isn’t working, but as we’re the third match racing group to start today, we won’t start until about 3 PM England time. We’ve already gone out to watch our USSTAG teammates go 3-0 this morning, then I met with our physio to get my slightly strained calf muscle worked on and my hand burn taped up, and I still have a bit more time to send this e-mail out. Unfortunately no pictures, but will send some on later.) With racing at the Weym...

US Women's Match Racing Champions!

We just finished up four days of racing in Sheboygan, WI where we won the 2010 US Women’s Match Racing Championship and defended our title from last year! In addition to being our national championship, this was an important event for us because it gave us a chance to get racing experience in Sonars in preparation for the World Championship this September, and the win qualified us to represent the United States in the 2011 ISAF Nations Cup in Sheboygan next September. Our team for this event was Genny Tulloch, Alice Manard, Karina Shelton...

Hi all, I’m home again after almost a month away, a broken computer, and some very limited internet access (both in Europe and in the US). The good news is we finished fourth at Kiel Week, I had a great time in Newport over the weekend fleet racing Melges 24s after all the match racing, I took my computer to the Mac store yesterday (hope to get it back next week!),and I now have almost a week at home before leaving again! For a final wrap-up of Kiel Week: teammate Alice Manard and I were fortunate to have Jenn Chamberlin as our new middl...

Sorry for the short writeup but since we got home at 1030 tonight and have had very late/short dinner and debrief, there’s no time to do a good explanation before bed. We went 2-1 yesterday in the Gold Round Robin, beating #1 ISAF ranked Lucy Macgregor and our American teammates then losing very closely to Katie Spithill after leading around the track, (there’s a video here where I was interviewed about the day by USSTAG’s Dave Johnson). Today was the end of the Gold Round Robin and the beginning of the quarterfinals. We came...
