The MISSA Great Lakes High School Championship was held at the Chicago Yacht Club over the weekend of Nov 15-16. Twenty nine squads from 16 high schools competed in Monroe Harbor. 10 races were run in the 420 Division and 12 in the Laser Radial Division. Racing was very difficult in the west/northwest breezes; the sailors had to contend with shifty winds that often varied not only in direction but also in strength from 5-6kts at one end of the course to 15-17 at the other end.
New Trier High School (Winnetka, IL) won the overall Great Lakes Championship trophy. Runners-up were:
2nd: Loyola Academy (Wilmette, IL)
3rd: Lake Forest HS (Lake Forest, IL)
In the 420 A Division the top three teams were:
1st: New Trier HS-1
2nd: Loyola Academy-1
3rd: Lake Forest-1
In the 420 B Division, the top three were:
1st: Loyola Academy
2nd: Grosse Pointe North HS 2 (Grosse Pointe, MI)
3rd: Grosse Pointe North HS 2
In the Laser Radials,
1st: Drew Shea, New Trier HS
2nd Maxime Deguine, Lake Forest HS
3rd: Eric Sauter, Wayzata HS (Wayzata, MN)
This was the largest high school championship regatta held in the District and the Chicago Yacht Club was a fantastic host.
Frank Ustach (Sailing Dir., CYC) did a terrific job in his first stint as Regatta Chair for this annual event and even did scoring on Sunday. Schwears and his on-water crew did a masterful job in difficult conditions; Ted Jones did a great job as the Chief Judge and moved the protests along quickly.
"Thank you" to all the sailors who participated (almost 200 in total!), to their parents who drove the teams and to the coaches who worked with the student sailors all season. Thanks to the Lake Forest Sailing Center, Sheridan Shores Sailing School (Wilmette, IL) who brought coach boats and additional 420s and sails.
SAILORS - THERE ARE LESS THAN 140 DAYS UNTIL THE MISSA ICE BREAKER - SEE YOU IN MARCH!
