Hopefully this doesn't open a can of worms because I know there are mixed emotions on the topic. But I certainly think that a school like UT, and many others for that matter would gain huge from sailing becoming an NCAA sport. I think that would certainly help some schools that are in tradional conferences (Big XII, Big X, PAC X) that have very strong athletic programs outside of sailing. If these teams get the funding, they can get the coaches, the travel budgets, and so forth. I'm not even talking about scholarships.

Ask anyone who went to the '05 Nationals and they will tell you that Lake Travis in Austin, TX was spectacular. Great sailing. Great People. Great Regatta. There is excellent sailing in so many parts of the country that college sailing doesn't visit enough. It's my opinion that Sailing becoming an NCAA sport would help to equalize much of the disparity between the districts.
Just my 2 cents

I wonder how Tulane will do in Semis. They seemed to really dominate the SEISA Dinghy Champs. I was surprised to see on the results that the A team had 7 out of ten firsts. Good Job to whoever it was. Tulane seems to have a good nucleus by winning B division as well. I hope Tulane qualifies for the Nationals. That will get some major recognition to SEISA. Good Luck Guys!

Scott is right that most of the high caliber sailors produced in SEISA go else ware. Just a short list: Lauren Brants (Harvard) is from Ft. Worth. Roberta Steele (Harvard) and Carolyn Prioleau (Stanford) are both from Houston and then there's all the Potts family from New Orleans. My choices were Texas, BC, or Charleston and I chose to stay here (I'm from Ft. Worth also).

SEISA does attract a group of high caliber sailors every year, we have a group like that now (Nataleigh Vann @ Texas is a Rolex winner), but that's not the whole issue, the level of coaching and competition is. And both of those are hard to achieve with the schools and geography we have here.
Also being at a high power program is not the be-all, end-all of college sailing. Many SEISA sailors graduate with a level or leadership and organizational skill (and lack of college loan debt and extra drusuits) that aren't possible at a coached program. And that serves them much better for the rest of their lives than being one of the elite in the ICSA.

Interesting perspective, but I wonder whether SEISA could ever really attract a group of high caliber sailors year after year.
