I can tell you right now the REAL SG team is not complaining about the regatta. They congradulated the loma and newport harbor teams after the regatta and knew they were out-raced during the regatta. Before people start pointing fingers know that SG was/is not complaining at all. Congrats newport and loma.

as an old timer that does pretty well on the national team racing circuit, I can tell you right now, that team racing wins team racing regattas. Yes weight and hiking technique help, but that's only part. You are certainly being a sore loser if you are claiming conditions determined the event results. Just wait til your out of high school by SEVERAL years and you'll look back at these videos and really see just how many missed chances there were.

Both teams did great. Congrats to the winners.

In the Caleb video:

he attributes poor performance at Mallory to being too heavy! So you can't attribute one to weight and not admit that it is not a factor in the other!! ...just as PL had no one light to take to Mallory maybe SG had no one heavy to take to Baker??

So convert some backup skippers into heavy crews or whatever you have to do. If you want to win a nationals on SF Bay you've got to plan on heavy conditions. Granted, gusty conditions suck for team racing, but it is what it is. I'd imagine if nationals were at Hotchkiss the west coast teams would have plenty of trouble if they didn't bring light crews.

(I mean, I've never been anywhere near a nationals, but that would just be my thought)

Facts 3 years ago

just an FYI
end of firstday blowing 28+ in gusts..it WAS windy

weight probably was was a factor. deciding factor? who knows...the best 3 teams were probably PL, NH, SG but who knows - certainly wasn't a real team racing regatta..PL was usomewhat unlucky with Bainbridge race...who expects RC to call a number of a boat not in the race? confusing as hull #s did not match sail #s.
PL weights on 2nd day 310lb, 310lb, 328lb heights??
NH weights? heights?
SG weights 270lb, 270 lb, 305 lbs hights approx 5'8", 5' 8", 5'10' (only team with girls sailing in top 4)

Knowing how to hike and being huge is completely different.

funny 3 years ago

haha PL romped St. Georges because they hike harder, and they can stay upright in 20 knots (St. Georges #17 couldn't). They had all three off the line instead of just two, and were in controlling positions.

uh oh some people are butt hurt that they don't know how to hike

Quit being sore losers.
Day One wasn't that breezy anyway. Regardless, everyone rosters 9 sailors. Don't discredit the winners for having a well balanced team.

The Cali teams won. Don't make excuses.

agree 3 years ago

very true, after the first few races of the day it was pretty much fleet racing with your teams, disappointing for those of us looking to do alot of really intense team racing.

sailor 3 years ago

thank you AC...this is very true, the 2 nessa teams were at least 30 pounds lighter per boat than the cali teams. the teams that did well were not only heavy, but also fleet racing the whole regatta, it doesnt matter that the better teams won every start and team raced better...they were just not as fast in that breeze as the cali teams.
congrats heavies

random person 3 years ago

personally I think this national regatta did not show who was the best high school team racing team. If the teams could of accually team raced... The outcome would of been very different. Sorry Cali teams...but good for you having 200 pound crews :-/

Right off the line St. George's was almost winning two pairs.

Ten seconds and about 40 pounds more per boat later Point Loma is owning. That's what being a tiny team vs. a huge team does to you.
Happened both races that day for St. George's vs Point Loma.
