Day 1 - Navy Fall Women's Provisional Standings USNA 10-11 OCT 6:05 PM 10-10-09 REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: It was a beautiful fall day in Annapolis with breezy and shifty Navy Fall Weather. The NW breeze started building just after nine as a front pushed through and built to sustained 15-18 with guts of 20-22 by the second set of the morning which saw some fast reaches on the trapezoid in the Severn river. The afternoon saw some lighter breeze with more shifts and lots of tight racing. 12 races were completed leaving us four for tomorrow. Many thanks to the Midshipmen, Rod Mincher, and Herb Larrabee for running races and safety boats. Special thanks also go out to Joan Morin and her committee of volunteers who put on dinner for the sailors and race committee after a long day on the water. After lunch 5 more races were sailed with WNW breeze lingering in the mid to high teens. In the last race of the day the breeze suddenly picked back up to about 30 which resulted in quite a few capsizes. A few competitors retired after finishing. One protest will be heard in the morning. All courses were windward/leeward with an offset and leeward gate. Four and six leg windward leeward courses with offsets and gates were used. The first three races were sailed in a 8-10 knot south west wind. After a short lunch break the wind shifted to the west at 4-6 knots for races four and five. Race six was sailed in a very nice south wind at 8-12 knots. No protests or breakdowns were filled. Thanks to Jay Horowitz and Sam Stokes for helping run the races. The first race started by 11:15am and was sailed in a 6-9 knot oscillating breeze, one of the more challenging wind patterns that frequent Treasure Island. The wind filled in a north-westerly direction and slowly moved west throughout the first four rotations with only slight alterations to the course. >From the 4th race during the second rotation, the breeze picked up to 12 knots and by the end of the day reached 17 knots. B Division completed 6 races and A Division completed 8 races by the end of the day at 6:00pm. All courses were windward/leeward with an offset and leeward gate. Three protests were filed, one disallowed, one resulting in a DSQ, and one to be heard tomorrow.
