If Zim Sailing really wants to be different and get its name out there, they should consider sponsoring some Competitive 420 Teams at Orange Bowl and/or MidWinters....or at least have some charter boats available.....

Craig,
If you don't have anything nice to say about Bobby, don't say anything at all.
:-P

Good info though.

I sailed one of the Performance Catamarans 420s (post Johnson, pre Zim), #1949 growing up. The boat seemed plenty fast. The vynilester resin appeared to be less susceptable than polyester to yellowing during extended use in saler.

The biggest diffecnces I have seen between the 3 current builders in the blades. All three have different rudder head designs and the blades seem to vary dramatically in thickness/foil shape/construction. That said the blade profile seems to be somewhat consistent. I think the RWO rudder head provided with the ps2000 C420s is by far the best of the bunch. I would like to see the variation in hull weight between the 3 builders. Also interesting would be the variation in weight amoung boats of the same make.

In general, the trend of this class seems to defy the reason it was first created. If boats are now >$7,000 and there is such a variation in construction/rigging from each of the three suppliers, why aren't all the top kids just sailing International 420's or 29ers.

Just to give you an example of how things have changed: At Youth Champs in 2003, several teams including mine were forced to duct tape garden hose to the bow of their boat for removing their bow bumper. I was forced to change my trapeze lines back to a standard set where the wire attached directly to the plastic T-handle.

Rant. Complete.

so bobby, is there a market for an adult optimist. Not the lame bull that that I've seen in US Sailing Books for coaching, but like, big time high performing sleds ripe for mods and bods... you know. So tell me bobby, is there a market for that?
