What do the blue and black flags mean? When is each awarded?
Check out this video. It explains a bit more about the rules and maneuvers.

What do the blue and black flags mean? When is each awarded?

1) Canfield clear ahead gybes on to port and becomes a give-way boat. Only gets one penalty because it's not an intentional violation of the rules and doesn't gain an advantage.

2) Canfield continues to fail to keep clear, inserts himself into an inappropriate inside overlap. He, by breaking a rule, has now gained an advantage and the only appropriate remedy is to give a double penalty. Third penalty of the match = black flag.
When you look at the 1st incident, Canfield was unable to cross on port, and even if you think Dave started gybing, once he re-established starboard gybe Canfield does not attempt to keep clear. He continues to force Dave to gybe onto Port to keep clear, forcing a right of way boat to suddenly be a give-way outside boat. The double pen was absolutely the only option there.

very controversial...first penalty questionable, but where did the other two penalties come from???
