This isn't some kid talking either. Our boy Russ here is 23 today. Happy birthday Russ!

I was on Dave's boat and we talked plenty about the situation. We felt that we were given an opportunity to keep clear by Jes and therefore didn't throw the Y flag. Furthermore, we fulfilled our obligation to keep clear by immediately tacking back to the wall.

All in all, it was a pretty sweet move. We went from potentially leading to playing catch-up with these two tacks.

This situation was talked about at the debrief. Henry Menin, one of the umpires in the boat that Chris was filming from, emphasized the wording in 20.1(b), saying that GH needed to give DP room to tack, which he did. Henry thought that DP tacked back as soon as possible after his first tack was complete, which I think HM said he had room to do, and GH avoided. Green Flag.

let's just keep throwing rule #s out there, we'll get the right one eventually

My takes: umps nailed this one, exactly right.
perry hails, GH replies with you tack
perry has room to tack; he does so in a seamanlike manner. rule 20 now off. upon reaching port, perry delays for a moment, then tacks. only rule in play here is 10.
i would say perry came VERY close to getting a flag for breaking 10 on the second tack, but green was probably the correct call... it may have been that he could have tacked more immediately, but close enough that it should be greened.
great video chris!

Rule 19

errr if Gram Hansen wasn't subject to 15, then he wouldn't have to give him room

Why 15? The right of way boat acquired through the actions of the other boat. Perry had room to tack, as he completed the tack. He then was a give way boat and needed room to keep clear which, by tacking to port, Gram-Hansen provided to him.

Does rule 15 apply naturally when Perry tacks to port?

If yes, Hansen doesn't foul.
If no, there might be a different argument.

I asked this question at the POW qualifier in san fran sailed out of st francis regarding the sea wall there. The umpire gave me the answer that it was to his discretion if he thought it was safe enough to go in or not. I think that in this case the umpires saw that there was little room for perry to go back toward the wall so his delayed tack was expected. One could say that Perry has an obligation to tack back as soon as it is safe for him to do so. If he is on port and its not safe for him to tack back then it is hansens obligation to tack onto port. I think that the definition of safe to tack would be that if perry tacks and he would be able to sail on starboard and have enough time to again properly hail for RTT then its safe. but if he is forced to tack to startboard and then immediately tack again onto port then it was hansens obligation to tack away on the first meeting.

As for your questions, I do not think that hanses tack to port would satisfy his obligations because he tack came after perry was forced back to starboard because of hansen being where he was.
This is all just thought I can't find my rule book right now so...
Perry does tack and become give way boat but what does rule 20 say about boats on opposite tacks near a continuing obstruction?

What an awesome sequence of events beginning around 4:40.

Perry hails for RTT and Hansen replies with "You tack".
Perry tacks and becomes a give way boat (rule 10).
Perry is then forced to immediately tack towards the wall.
Is Perry's second tack (back onto starboard) seaman like?
Does it matter?
Does Hansen's tack away onto port satisfy his obligation to give Perry RTT AND keep clear of him?
