Cathedral Catholic's Mallory Schluter talks about her decision to quickly capsize to empty her boat

this is embarrasing

For what it's worth, new crew or veteran crew, I still think it was the right move capsizing the boat, especially since the chop of the bay combined with how low in the water you'll be riding will probably never allow you to make progress bailing .

Though next time, have the lighter (and for that matter more experienced) person go for the centerboard (you will scoop less water and be more likely to avoid turtling). Also, don't try to scoop up whoever goes in the water (in this case it was you), rather have them climb back in once the boat is righted. This way it will not only be easier for the lighter person on the centerboard to right the boat (not having to pull against the heavier persons weight) but you will also scoop much less "new" water (the person in the water won't be putting pressure on the gunwale thus allowing it to float)
These two things should position you for the best, driest outcome.
