The weekend of the 20th + 21st November sees the the London 6 Pack take place. The event is hosted by the University of London Sailing Club based at BTYC and sailed on the Welsh Harp Reservoir in north London. The number of entries for the 2010 event is limited to 16 teams with racing sailed in the clubs 3 flights of 18 identical firefly dinghies. It is planned that the event will follow a round-robin and subsequent knockout format. In light of the forecast the bold move to complete a full round robin was taken on Saturday morning and 75 races were completed in a chilly 6-8 knot northerly breeze. Overnight leaders were Spinnaker Spankers followed by a number of teams only one win behind. Competitors were rewarded for the slightly earlier start time on Sunday morning with the Harp serving up another day of perfect conditions with a slightly breezier and unstable wind from the north. The remaining 30-odd races of the round robin were completed by mid morning and Spinnaker Spankers continued where they left off on Saturday, taking out the first stage of the competition. Teams were then split into gold, silver and bronze leagues and the next set of 30 races were completed by early afternoon, which provided an overall position for the lower placed teams and the seedings for the semi finals. The Bronze league was won by Bristol University, the gold league by Royal Thames Red on a points tiebreak and the silver league by the University of London who then beat Royal Thames Blue in the playoff for the final semi final spot. In the first semi final London faced up against Royal Thames Red who overcame them in two close races. In the first, Royal Thames held a 1, 4, 5 and despite the best efforts of London to convert eventually hit a play 1 to win. In the second race strong work from Andy Cornah in P1 eventually brought his teammates back into the race and Royal Thames went through with a 1, 2. The second semi final between Spinnaker Spankers and Exeter University was a much closer score line with Spinnaker eventually prevailing 2-1 to join Royal Thames in the final. First up though was the petit-final which had the added incentive of deciding the top university team but unfortunately it didn'™t live up to its billing with strong starting from Exeter and a lacklustre performance from London giving them the final podium spot. Racing in the final was a lot closer and after some competitive pre-start action in both races Spinnaker Spankers overcame Royal Thames Red 2-0 to add the 2010 London 6 Pack to their growing trophy cabinet. The event was one of the most successful in recent history with every team racing between 18 and 23 times over the weekend and the seemingly novel concept of completing the full format of competition at a university-run event should not go unnoticed. ULSC would like to thank Bruce Hebbert for coordinating the umpires, the umpires themselves [far to many to list I'm afraid!] Amanda Hebbert for her sterling work on the finish boat, Sevenoaks School, Imperial College, various Castaways, BTYC and all other ULSC members for their help in running the event. ULSC also hosts the London Duck team racing event, entry deadline is 11th February, teams interested should apply via the BUSA website. Results | 1. Spinnaker Spankers 2.
