Boston, MA 02215 college Team
The Boston University Dinghy Sailors (BUDS) are the club sailing team at Boston University. We compete at the varsity level with other colleges and universities throughout New England and the United States in both one and two day regattas. The BUDS are in the New England (NEISA) district of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). Our home waters are on the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts between the Boston University and Massachusetts Avenue (Harvard) Bridges. We practice in a fleet of eighteen Vanguard Flying Juniors (FJ's). The BUDS practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 2:30PM until about 6:30PM. Our sailing season is in both fall and spring. The Boston University Dinghy Sailors are one of the most successful teams at BU. Since 1980, the team has won seven National titles, numerous Conference and Atlantic Coast Championships, and have produced more All-Americans than any other sport at the university. We have graduated three national "Sailors of the Year" and one "Sportsman of the Year".
BUDS History
The Boston University Sailing team was formed in the fall of 1937. The founding members were; Arma E. (Ham) Anson; Thomas Coleman; Jacob Saliba, Bob Shields; Ned Walker and Fred Walker. The team originally practiced out of the MIT sailing facility. In the fifties, the sailing team practiced out of Community Boating, Inc. Boston University purchased 4 old wooden Tech dinghies from MIT and stored at them at Community Boating. In 1958, eight new fiberglass Tech dinghies were purchased and Boston University began teaching sailing classes, run by the Recreational Department. The onshore classes were taught at BU, while the offshore classes remained at Community Boating. In 1967, when the Boston University Crew Team moved to a new facility, the sailing team moved into the old crew boathouse. This facility was built in 1940, due in large part, to a student named Jim Conlon. Jim, a Boston University Crew team member, began lobbying for a small, inexpensive (less than $50,000) structure to harbor the Crew team. Three years later, the Boathouse was complete.
Our Facility
The Boston University Dinghy Sailors sail out of the Boston University Sailing Pavilion located next to the BU Bridge on the Charles River Esplanade. The boathouse contains a full classroom, changing facilities, and repair area. Restroom facilities are located on the Boston University campus across Storrow Drive from the facility.

After the conclusion of the New England Team Race Championships at Sail Newport, NEISA voted on a number of awards. Senior Terrier crew Alison Bittl was named as a 2nd Team, All-NEISA Crew. NEISA has proven once again to be the premier conference in the country and will be well represented at Nationals (all 8 teams at Semi-Finals easily qualified for Nationals). There are an extraordinary number of outstanding crews in the conference and to be named either the 1st or 2nd team in New England is truly a great honor. Congratulations Alie! In a pleasant but not shocking surprise, senior Terrier skipper William Martin received the NEISA Sportsmanship Award. This award is voted by the sailors themselves (no team can vote for one of their own sailors), and is consequently held in the highest regard. Billy was a fierce collegiate sailor, competing at the highest level this year as our team leader, as well as last year, when he finished 8th in B Division at the 2009 ICSA Coed Double-handed Nationals and 10th at 2008 ICSA Mens Single-handed Nationals. Throughout all, including the less fortunate times, Billy has maintained a great respect for Sport of Sailing and for his fellow competitors. He has consistently displayed the attributes of outstanding sportsmanship and has been an honor to sail with and against. Thank you Billy for setting a fine example for all and congratulations!
