The first weekend of the 2011 Lighthouse Charity Regatta is now history. The event saw a great showing of Lasers, Sunfish, 420s, Flyins Scots and a handful of boats, including a hand build Saber, in the handicap fleet.
There was no lack of wind on Saturday. Winds for Sunday were forecast to be very high so the decision to hold 4 races on Saturday was made. A great dinner and dance, with the Wise Guys providing the music, was held Saturday night.
Sunday morning the forecast high winds showed up with gusts into the 40s. As a result, racing was cancelled and awards presented. I am please to announce OCU Team 1, Chris (helm) and Alvin (crew), took 1st place in the 420 class and OCU Team 2, Svetlana (helm) and Thanh (crew) took 2nd place.
The second weekend of the Lighthouse Charity Regatta is coming up fast (June 25-26) for keelboat competition. Looks like OCU Sailing will enter a Catalina 22.
The 2011 Lake Hefner Challenge Cup, an annual event held in conjunction with the Lighthouse Charities Regatta, was held on Friday, June 17th at Oklahoma City Boat Club. In previous years, this event featured sponsoring organizations sailing against each other on Catalina 25s. Given Lighthouse Charitiesâ support of youth and collegiate sailing, this yearâs race saw a different format with colleges competing against each other on Vanguard 420s.
By the time registration ended Friday afternoon, a total of seven teams had assembled for the competition. These teams represented: University of Kansas (KU), University of Oklahoma (OU); University of Central Oklahoma (UCO); Oklahoma State University (OSU); and Oklahoma City University (OCU). The Skipperâs meeting took place at 5:30PM and the Race Committee announced a postponement due to very high winds. The teams took advantage of the down time to enjoy a fantastic dinner prepared by Oklahoma City Boat Club members in support of the regatta. By 6:45PM, conditions had improved enough to commence with the competition and boat crews headed to the water, rigged their boats and headed out onto the lake.
A total of three races were conducted for the regatta. Awards were presented to the top 4 finishers. The results of the event were: 4th Place â OSU; 3rd Place - UCO Team 2; 2nd Place - OCU Team 1; and 1st Place - OU. This event was open to alumni and students of the various collegiate sailing programs. Sailing on OCU Team #1 were Chris Holman â11 (helm) and Svetlana Samokhvalova â14 (crew). Sailing on OCU Team #2 were Timothy Harlin â10 (helm) and Thien Do â12 (crew).
Lighthouse Charities, Inc is a non-profit corporation that promotes youth sailing and other youth oriented activities. It is owned and operated by Oklahoma City Boat Club, which is the host club for the OCU, OU and UCO sailing programs. Proceeds from the Lighthouse Charities Regatta and the Lake Hefner Challenge Cup go, in part, to support collegiate and youth sailing. The student and alumni sailors of OCU, OU, and UCO offer our sincerest appreciation for the generous support of Lighthouse Charities and Oklahoma City Boat Club. We couldnât do it without you. Special thanks go out to all the OCBC member volunteers who cooked, cleaned, organized, served as race committee and other leadership roles. You make a difference!
We are back from a successful trip to Texas A&M for the Barnyard Regatta where the team placed 2nd behind University of Texas. Pictures to be posted soon! I am honored to congratulate Alvin, Chris, Peter, Svetlana and Thien!! Sorry to add that Barnyard will likely be the last ICSA regatta for graduating Senior Chris. Next event on the horizon is the 43rd Course Croisiere Edhec Regatta in Lorient, France. We leave April 8th.
Team members Chris and Peter submitted resumes to be considered for crew positions on the All-American Offshore Team. If successful, they will begin training this Spring, participating in the Block Island Race in May, Annapolis Newport and Trans-Atlantic races in June, and the fastnet in August. Their interest alone in this endeavor brings great credit to the OCU Sailing program. Wish them luck!
