On August 28, 2010, BU Coach Brad Churchill rollerbladed 164 miles in 24 hours between his home in Boston, MA and UNH in Durham, NH in an effort to raise money for the UNH Sailing Team who had lost their boat house and fleet to an arson fire. The UNH sailing team was there to support Brad and document his journey.
The pledge drive has ended, but donations are still needed and gratefully accepted at the UNH Sailing Webpage.
I weighed 194lbs a few days before the trip.
I carbo-loaded up to 198lbs at go.
At the finish I was 196lbs.
I only lost two pounds.
Though I'm actually 2 pounds over my original weight, it's 2 pounds of new muscle.
On the trip I drank:
2 gallons of gatorade mixture
1 liter of Smart Water
2 10 oz cans of Red Bull
14 Non-Alcoholic Beers
I ate:
8 oz cheese
1 stick of salami
3 Slim Jims
3 Cliff Bars
1 pkg. choc. chip mini-muffins
My Condition after the skate:
-A very stiff lower back, almost numb. but nothing I haven't experienced before and today (monday) it feels
much better. By tomorrow it will be gone completely.
-Sore joints, ankles, knees, and very sore knuckles.
-Muscles themselves are in very good shape.
If I had to do it all again this coming Friday I'd be good to go.
What I learned:
I was reminded that road conditions mean everything. On flat, smooth roads with room to move,
there's no question in my mind that I would have done over 200 miles.
That being said, I learned to respect my limitations too. I didn't take a hitch over the border to Maine,
I didn't take the longer, hilly, Durham Point rd/Bay rd. Either would have seriously set me back since the
road conditions later on weren't as good.
I learned it is possible to get sick of music. 24 hours straight of tunes and I was considering peace and
quiet as possible option. Of tunes on the ipod I gained an appreciation of "Switchfoot" and "Iron and Wine",
Though I really had a wide range of offerings. On video tape, I recommended Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not To Come".
However, if I would to sum of the trip musically I take a montage of Switchfoot's "Redemption" and "More Than Fine" and
set that to a skating video.
I'm sure I'll think of more later, I always do.

Brad Churchill at his home, four days before the skate.
About the skate:
For 24 hours on Saturday, August 28, Brad Churchill, coach of the Boston University sailing team, will rollerblade up and down the coast of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, connecting his hometown of Boston with Durham, NH, home of the UNH Wildcats. He will undertake this daunting task to raise money and awareness for the University of New Hampshire Community Sailing Program and the UNH Sailing Team.
On March 3rd 2010 an arson fire quickly consumed the UNH boathouse; home to the Community Sailing Program and UNH sailing. The sailing team and its community programs offer students and community members both competitive and non-competitive opportunities. The boathouse that we use housed over 55 boats and supporting equipment. Luckily nobody was hurt. While the building was insured the contents were not. As a club team with a limited budget we raise the vast majority of our funds. Since the fire, the team, sailing community and local seacoast area has worked hard to raise money to help get us back on our feet. With the temporary loan of everything from coach boats to a couple of FJ's, one 420 and a donation for six Bugs the summer community sailing program was able to limp along. We continue to raise money to rebuild our facility and our fleet, in order to remain competitive on the collegiate front as well as to provide for the community programs.

Pledges
Needless to say, all proceeds from this drive will go to the UNH Sailing Team Fund. There are two options:
1. One-time donation - You can pay a lump sum online right now with your credit card and the amount will not change no matter what Brad does.
2. Pledge Per Mile - You can pledge a small amount of money per mile that Brad completes on his trip. You will be invoiced later. How far will Brad ride? Experts estimate 150 miles conservatively, but if he's really in the zone it could be many more.
College sailing teams are invited to challenge themselves to see which team can raise the most. When donating, just enter the name of the college team you are supporting in the contact info.
Companies who donate $500 or more will be thanked by having their logo and link displayed on this page. Interested companies should contact Chris Love at chris@sailgroove.org.
Track Brad
Kattack (kattack.com) has generously agreed to keep track of Brad while he's on the road. On Saturday, watch right here for live GPS tracking while Brad winds through the back roads of southern New England. Also watch for photo and video updates from the checkpoints to be posted when possible. Going to be in the area? Stay tuned for a list of checkpoints from which to cheer Brad on.
