Last weekend at the MCSA Singlehanded Championship, Michigan State's Lauren Knoles was in first place when her mast snapped. That would have been the end of the regatta and her chances at qualifying for Singlehand Nationals, had it not been for the Corinthian spirit shown by Wisconsin's Christine Porter and Meg Six.

Rule 41 only applies during an actual race. MSU was correctly scored DNF for race 5. Unless restricted by the SI's or class rules, boat substitution between races is perfectly legal.

I'm kind of surprised no one had a spare upper section lying around. This sort of stuff always happens in laser racing.

41 OUTSIDE HELP
A boat shall not receive help from any outside source, except
(a) help for an ill or injured crew member;
(b) after a collision, help from the crew of the other boat to get clear;
(c) help in the form of information freely available to all boats;
(d) unsolicited information from a disinterested source, which may be another boat in the same race.
