Molly was born in San Diego, CA on April 13, 1979 to Michael and Kathryn O’Bryan. She began sailing at a young age with her family on their Cal-29. At age 7 she started in the San Diego Yacht Club Junior Program sailing Naples Sabots, an 8-foot boat popular in Southern California. In high school she began sailing double-handed boats, crewing for her team, University of San Diego High School, as well as for the SDYC Junior Program. In 1995 she represented the United States at the ISAF Youth World Championships crewing in Laser II’s.
Molly attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa, competing on the newly formed women’s sailing team, as well as the co-ed varsity team. She competed as a skipper in 9 National Championships, placing top 5 in five of them and winning the Women’s National Championship in 2001. Molly was a member of the All-American Team from 2000-2002. She was the captain of the women’s team for three years and captain of the co-ed team in 2002. The University of Hawaii Athletic Department awarded her the Jack Bonham Award, given to one graduating female and male athlete for athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character.
