The MISSA Ice Breaker Regatta kicked off the Spring high school sailing season in the Midwest with eighty sailors and eighteen teams. Hosted annually by Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Station, the regatta is known for its frigid 35 degree Lake Michigan water temperatues and unpredictable weather. This season, most of the lakes in the region are covered by ice. This includes Lake Minnetonka, host of last season's Baker Team Race Championship, which is covered by ice ten inches thick at last measurement by a local ice fisherman.

Loyola Gold took home the Ice Breaker title behind the B Division dominance of Tommy Holmberg and Grace Williams. Holmberg/Williams finished with just 35 points in twelve races to take honors by 31 points over Nicholas Clemence of Marquette HS. Lake Forest and New Trier finished second and third, respectively. Loyola was able to overcome the elements to take the first regatta of the "Spring" season. A Division was won by New Trier's Drew Shea who bested Will Haeger of Lake Forest and Stephanie Hudson of New Trier in second and third, respectively. Holmberg's A Division team mates, Alex Post/Melinda Lee placed fourth.
Temperatures on Sunday never exceeded 35 degrees. Snow fell throughout the morning as three inches accumulated. Thanks to Chicago Yacht Club for permitting Sailgroove to cover the event.
Regatta Preview:
This weekend, approximately 80 sailors are expected to compete despite the following winter weather forecast - Cloudy skies with periods of light rain later in the day. High 42F. Winds NE at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Overnight, three inches of snow are predicted.
Expected local schools include Lake Forest, Loyola, New Trier, St Ignatius, and Walter Payton. Minnetonka, Grosse Pointe North, Grosse Pointe South, Oconomowoc, Trinity, and Marquette high schools are also expected to compete.
