The current system for national championships, instituted in 2008, includes one round of qualifying regattas in which 36 teams are split between an Eastern and a Western semifinal round to determine which teams will compete for the national championship. This year, with the excellent timing of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover, the Eastern and Western semifinals will take place simultaneously at Boston's Fan Pier, just off the dock of the Volvo Race Village. This means all 36 teams will be competing in front of a crowd of potentially thousands, complete with stadium seating and a jumbotron!
