The 2009 Chicago Yacht Club Offshore Verve Cup Regatta will take place on August 14, 15 and 16 at the CYC Monroe Street Station. In 2009, the Offshore Verve Cup will again provide some of the most competitive course racing in Chicago. The event is sailed over three days and takes place on three racing circles with the Chicago skyline and the Chicago Air and Water show as a backdrop.
The 2009 Chicago Yacht Club Offshore Verve Cup Regatta will take place on August 14, 15 and 16 at the CYC Monroe Street Station. Please save the date now for this one-of-a-kind regatta that is a highlight of the sailing season in the Midwest. In 2009, the Offshore Verve Cup will again provide some of the most competitive course racing in Chicago. The event is sailed over three days and takes place on three racing circles with the Chicago skyline and the Chicago Air and Water show as a backdrop. Also this year, the Verve will host several championships. In 2009, the Verve will be the host regatta for the Lake Michigan PHRF Championships. In addition, the Beneteau 40.7 North American Championships return to the Verve this year after a several year hiatus. “We’re very excited to host these kinds of championships at the Verve Cup Regatta,” said Winn Soldani, Chairman of the Verve Cup Regatta Committee, “It’s our vision to build a regatta experience on and off the water that brings championships like these to Chicago and to the Verve Cup Regatta.” As with last year’s regatta, registration will be available online in the early spring at the Chicago Yacht Club website. All skippers who were entered last year will receive an email with entry information for 2009 when it is available. In August 2009, Chicago Yacht Club will host the seventeenth annual Verve Cup Offshore Regatta. The event features a three-day offshore regatta, which is one of the premier yachting events for racing sailors in Chicago and the Midwest/Great Lakes. As one of the only major offshore regattas held in the U.S. during the month of August, Verve Cup has developed as a world-class event, attracting national and international sailing competitors. Held along Chicago’s beautiful lake front, with stunning Chicago skyline as a backdrop, the Verve Cup Regatta will attract 250-300 yachts in the offshore regattas for this three-day event. Participating yachts range in size from 25 feet up to 80 feet in length, and carry crew from 4 to 20 persons. During the regatta, Chicago Yacht Club will welcome over 3,000 racers, spouses and guests at their Monroe harbor clubhouse. These participants are treated to three days of top quality racing, followed by food, entertainment and camaraderie.
Competitors participate in multiple races, and boats sail either with a rating handicap or a one design so that boats of different size and character can compete against one another in one of the 18 plus racing sections. Overall prizes are awarded to the top finishers in each section, with one offshore boat winning the perpetual Verve Cup Trophy. The Verve Cup trophy dates from 1893 and is Chicago Yacht Club’s oldest trophy. Overall awards are awarded for each class of boat.
Merchandise, such as t-shirts, are available for sale to all competitors, spouses and guests. Race sponsors also set-up kiosks and displays during race week to take advantage of all the traffic at the Club. Food, beverages and, music are provided for each evening’s festivities.
