C Fleet

Tim Krech with wife Bre and third crew Ann Spencer took home the silver in the 2009 ILYA C Championships. Krech had the event won yesterday but chose to sail the race with his dad today. Joe Kutschenreuter with crew Randy Schmidt and Katie Porter hung on to second using the last race as a throwout. Paul Reilly with Aaron Mann and Catherine Burke remained in third. The top three finishers show the versatility of the boat. Joe was the top junior and Reilly the top senior. Reilly is near legend after winning the C championships some  20 years ago, leaving scow sailing for those long years and returning last year to relive his youth. He sailed like a youngster all week. Congrats to all three. All these and more on Sailgroove.org .  Look for the list of events covered and we are there: ILYA Multiclass Championships. Check out Aaron Mann's interview on the first day, Catherine Burke's interview entitled "Live Bait", the life of a third, interviews with Bre and Tim Krech and more.

E Fleet
 Burtonwinning
Tom Burton with crew Bruce Martinson, Martha Morgan and Andy Ferguson
It took seven races and the last race to determine the '09 E champ and Tom Burton it is. It became a two horse town with Brian Porter's 14 in race #6. Barkow faltered in the last race to give Burton a four point lead and another championship. Lots of young faces in the fleet with crew and skipper alike. Erik Bowers won the last race with dad Mark, MIke Woldum and Ali Gutenkunst on board.Check out the Sailgroove E ride with Chris Love on Rob Evans boat.

We move on to the next portion of the regatta with the majestic A's and fast MC's taking to Green Lake. The excitement and power builds as the A's entered town. Even with covers enveloping the hulls, you could sense the power of these A machines traveling through downtown. The Heidel House is near capacity. New race committee move in. Lots of changes but Scowlines and Sailgroove remain on board. We have to change media boats to accommodate the raw speed of the A's. The executive team of Jim Smith and Dave Schmidt remain on the last morning of measurement.

I-28, Andy Burdick with owner Terry Blanchard, Josh Garber, Peter Keck, Jim Petersen, Ben Porter and Coye Harrett had to fight back in the races to take a 1-2 for the regatta win. Brian Porter sailed the M-4 and proved to be tough. The Melvin team led by Pat Hughes sailed beautifully and was noted to be a "sure winner" in the near, near future. The teamwork on the boat is impressive to watch. And watch it, you can. Sailgroove was there for all the action. With some wild spnnaker sets and rides immediately past the windward offset, this rracing was EXCITING. Lead changes, penalty turns, close quarters - a great deal caught on camera.

Thanks to Green Lake. Each year as we leave the event, it is with a pang of sadness. The opportunity to visit and compete with old friends is unmatched. We long to maintain this bond as long as we can. Each site creates memories or rekindles our love for our Inland lakes. Green Lake is one of those sites you long for. Looking out over the water, the ghosts of regattas past, races sailed with individual victories for all the individual sailors, parties that live in infamy, serene moments on this beautiful shore -- it's all the charm and attachment to Green Lake. Thanks again to John Hayashi, Sue Weston and Bill MacNeill who reported a much-deserved retirement. We look forward to our return and wish it were today.

Green Lake has a wonderful selection of polos, fast-dry long and short sleeve shirt and windshirts for sale

E scow coverage appears light to me. The hot shots are in that fleet - Porters, Barkow, Bowers, Burton, and Jewett. Looking forward to Melges and the A scows. Hoping for good winds.

Chris
This has great potential. Pity the ILYA is not taking advantage of what you have done at College Sailing events, bringing it in real time broadcasting, race by race results and the ambiance of the event. I think we are missing a lot. Still, it is a great jump up on what we have ever had before for our program.

Do you realize who is helping you? Candace Porter is the past commodore of the ILYA, the mother of the only female skipper and by far the most amazing supporter of youth sailing around
You should give her a hug and say thank you. Many a kid around here is still sailing because of her
